The lobby for the adoption of scholastic aptitude tests to decide university entry ("Entrance tests will favour wealthy", THES , August 22) should note that these are losing popularity in the US ("Controversial test due to be revamped", THES , August 22).
Scores can be improved by coaching. In California, the rich pay up to $150 (£95) an hour for SATs coaching for their offspring, which suggests that it makes a big difference.
