Confusion is a familiar concept for the French philosopher Alain Badiou, who introduced his lecture on being, existence and death at the British Library on April 4 with the words: "I'm sorry, but tonight no examples, nothing concrete - only pure abstraction", striking terror into those less-informed and imminently stumped members of his audience.
