Edinburgh University, accused in recent years of excessive anglicisation, has been pointing to the vast range of Scottish courses on offer. But the Scottish history department clearly needs to do more work: a university newsletter says Edinburgh's charter was granted by "King James I (son of Mary Queen of Scots and later to become James VI of England and Wales)". The monarch is more usually known as King James VI of Scotland and King James I following the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
The titles of eminent Scots are apparently not a strong point either: David Hume, philosopher and Edinburgh graduate, is given a non-existent knighthood, while Liberal Democrat peer Lord Steel, another alumnus, is demoted to being the son of a peer as "Lord David Steel".
