Brussels, 25 Nov 2002
The Research DG's Energy production and distribution systems unit is organising an information and brokerage conference, to take place in Madrid, Spain on 15 January 2003, entitled 'Future electricity networks'.
Renewable energy sources and distributed generation for heating, cooling and electricity are expected to play a major role in any future sustainable energy supply for Europe. The benefits of such an enhanced role will be felt in terms of environmental protection (combating the greenhouse effect and reducing atmospheric pollution), security and diversification of energy supply, increased industrial competitiveness and social and economic cohesion, all of which are major EU policy objectives. The conference focuses on the substantial challenge ahead to integrate such distributed resources into existing energy systems.
The conference aims at optimising the process of preparation and submission of proposals to the Commission's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) in the field of distributed energy resources and in the context of the European Research Area and related EU policies.
From the opening address by Commission officials to the parallel discussions on potential proposals on new concepts and components for transmission, distribution and storage of electricity, the creation of a genuine European Research Area in this domain will be emphasised.
