South African president Thabo Mbeki this week came to Glasgow Caledonian University to name the Govan Mbeki health building in honour of his father, a veteran of the fight against apartheid. Govan Mbeki was named after William Govan of the Glasgow Missionary Society, first principal of the Lovedale Institute in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where Mbeki and Nelson Mandela received their early education. President Mbeki, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by GCU last year, met students, staff and members of the Scottish anti-apartheid movement.
