Lecturers' unions requested a generous pinch of salt to accompany the news that Roger Ward, new chief executive of the Association of Colleges, was leaving behind his past as a bruising negotiator to embrace a future of uniting and promoting the further education sector.

This may have helped them digest the first major circular distributed to colleges following his appointment. It contained useful advice on sacking and re-engaging Silver Book staff.
