If the Research Assessment Exercise produces bizarre outcomes for certain institutions, the Higher Education Funding Council for England will know who to blame - computer viruses which afflicted eight submission discs, four of them Scottish and one Welsh. While HEFCE scents a Celtic plot, the Scots and Welsh are muttering darkly about the quality of the discs supplied by English organisers.
