The European Commission and the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) are jointly financing a major international conference on researcher mobility, entitled 'the career of a researcher in the European Research Area [ERA]', to take place from 16 to 18 July in Florence, Italy.
The event aims to stimulate ongoing discussions at European and national level about the role and importance of the researcher in the creation of the ERA and in achieving the Barcelona and Lisbon objectives. It will also contribute to future initiatives of the Italian Presidency concerning the careers of researchers in Europe.
Six thematic workshops will address key issues such as the requirements of the research employment market in Europe, the public perception, visibility and recognition of the researcher profession, and the opening of national systems for recruitment, evaluation and career development.
A final plenary session will present the results of the workshop discussions, and will serve as the basis for a conference declaration.
Keynote speakers expected at the event include Nobel Laureate Harry Kroto; Achilleas Mitsos, Director General of the Commission's Research DG; Dimitris Deniozos, Secretary General of the Greek Research Ministry; and Guido Possa, Italian Vice Minister for Education, Universities and Research.
