Oxford top-up fees row
Oxford University yesterday paved the way for introducing controversial top-up fees of up to £3,000 a year. Its ruling body rejected a motion opposing the charges drafted by Mike Woodin, a psychology tutor at Balliol College. Instead, the Congregation - Oxford's parliament which comprises academic and senior administrative staff - carried an amendment that stated that it is realistic to expect that students should bear some of the costs of their higher education. The Congregation voted 97-45 for the amendment. The university stressed that the vote simply means keeping options open.

Ruskin College shelves plans for new site
Ruskin College, Oxford, has shelved plans to leave its historic city-centre home for a new building on a site outside Oxford. Ruskin blames the u-turn on 'financial problems' with the developer. In spite of the setback and opposition from students and lecturers, the college principal has said that the college's executive remains committed to moving the college to a single site with new accommodation.

Influential social-scientist dies
Elliott Jacques, the social scientist and psychoanalyst who coined the phrase "mid-life crisis" and developed the concept of "corporate culture", has died aged 86.
