University denies 'dumbing down' policy

Heriot-Watt University has rejected allegations that it has allowed students to pass courses with marks as low as 13 per cent to boost completion rates. According to principal John Archer, "Any assertion that students receive degrees with less than an aggregate of 40 per cent is totally false." Mathematics lecturer Brian Dodds has been quoted in the press complaining of "dumbing down" of modules.
