An international consortium of scientists has created a natural and renewable method for producing hydrogen to generate electricity, which could dramatically reduce future dependence on fossil fuels. The breakthrough means ethanol from crop fermentation can be converted to hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The new method comes from a ten-year collaboration between the University of Aberdeen and institutions in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Spain. Hicham Idriss, Aberdeen's professor of energy futures, said: "It's quite feasible that we could see the use of this new type of catalysts to generate the hydrogen used in the UK in the future if the necessary changes to public policy were implemented."
