Margot Feelbetter missed the point in her response regarding a university's demand that its academics "dress up" on open days ("Cosmetic effect", 17 March).
British universities have overtly practised age discrimination for years. I've experienced it, having gained a doctorate at the age of 54 some years ago. Fifty-five applications later, I'd had only one interview - for which I wore a suit, but the head of the department did not.
