Minority report 2

十二月 11, 2008

I could probably have this argument with my esteemed new colleague, Majid Yar (Letters, 4 December), in the corridors of Hull, but it seems to me that, pace his welcome appointment, the key issue is about "race". At every level of higher education, both in academic and managerial posts, members of ethnic minorities are underrepresented, even in those disciplines - law, business, medicine - that have tended to overrecruit from minority populations. This underrepresentation generally becomes more marked the higher up the academic ladder you go, and is most notable at the level of professor, professional association, Royal College and so on. Unfortunately, it extends also to my own discipline of social policy, despite its central concerns with equality and social justice.
