Flight of fancy

十一月 2, 2007

You recently said that Southampton's vice-chancellor, Bill Wakeham, is making a "small sacrifice" by driving an eco-friendly car around campus rather than his own Porsche ("Southampton grows greener", October 5).

This is the man who last year travelled by private jet to the US. The jet crossed the Atlantic four times: once empty to collect him and his colleagues with their partners, then twice on their return trip, before flying back empty.

By driving the eco-friendly car, he will save 0.153kg of carbon emissions per kilometre. If he travels 20km per business day, it will take four years to make up for the emissions from his private jet trip. Not looking so green now, is he?
