Contrary to the report in The Times Higher (June 11), the future of chemistry and physics at Nottingham Trent University is not in question. Indeed, the subjects remain key to the courses offered by the School of Biomedical and Natural Sciences, whose teaching quality in chemistry, physics, biosciences and sports science is unrivalled and was graded 5 in the research assessment exercise.

The university is aware of the problems facing chemistry departments across the UK and is modernising its provision and continuing to provide full-time and part-time routes to degrees that meet the needs of employers. Our degree courses encompass professional practice derived from our wide contacts with industry, and will maintain the diversity of academic background and opportunity for students keen to pursue careers in science.
