Fellow non-traveller

五月 21, 2004

I would like to correct an error in last week's Times Higher front-page article ("Dollars lure scientists Down Under", May 14), which is causing me some inconvenience - and not just because of the lurid headline.

You report that I, together with three other Cambridge academics, are taking up Federation fellowships in Australia (in my case, at Sydney University). I was indeed offered one of these prestigious fellowships in February 2003 by the Australian Research Council. Unlike the three other academics, I am a British, not an Australian, citizen.

In March, I told Sydney that problems in managing the transition from Cambridge to Sydney had proved impossible to resolve in an acceptable way and that I would not be taking up the fellowship. I remain in Cambridge.

As you see, dollars are not all there is to life.
