Taking the union line

五月 3, 2002

Recent press coverage has stated that I support a graduate tax for students earning more than £25,000 (News, THES , April 19). For the record, I do not support it and never have supported it, publicly or privately.

I support the National Union of Students Scotland policy to campaign for the full implementation of the Cubie report. It would have seen far more support in maintenance grants and restored student access to state benefits. It also included a graduate endowment fund contribution, not a tax but a one-off payment, ring-fenced to fund future students, from graduates earning more than £25,000 a year.

The NUS opposes a graduate tax and I back my union's policy.
