OXFORD UNIVERSITY's St Hilda's is to set up a working group to help make itself more attractive to women academics after it failed by one vote last week to overturn its ban on male fellows. It must now find other ways of solving a shortage in female fellows caused by equal opportunities legislation introduced seven years ago. The college also hopes for donations to fund its own posts, which are not subject to the equal opportunity rules. The alternative may be to drop subjects, such as chemistry, where it has failed to fill vacancies.
