Clean energy from coffee grounds sounds wonderful (“Week in higher education”, News, 10 September), but soaking the grounds in sodium hydroxide (made by electrolysis, very energy-intensive) and then heating the result to 900ºC hardly seems environmentally friendly. Better a double espresso and then run on a treadmill for 10 minutes, methinks?
