Pamela Lomax, professor of educational research at Kingston University, has been elected president of the British Educational Research Association. Peter Mortimore, director of the Institute of Education, has been elected vice-president.
Christopher Hume, 54, a Sussex-based businessman, has been appointed chairman of the University of Brighton's board of governors.
David Wilson, director of the University of Central England's course in criminal justice policy and practice, and a former prison governor, has been appointed a patron of UNLOCK, the National Association of Ex-Offenders.
John Spence, vice-principal of the University of Strathclyde, has been elected president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
At York, Derek Attridge, moves from Cambridge and Rutgers universities to become Leverhulme personal research professor in the English department. Also in English, Jonathan Dolimore moves from Sussex to take up a professorship while Lawrence Rainey joins from Yale; and Richard Bessel leaves the Open University to become professor of history.
Kingston University has made a series of management changes. Caroline Gipps, dean of research at the Institute of Education, University of London, becomes deputy vice-chancellor. Tony Mercer, David Miles and Gail Cunningham become pro-vice-chancellors with responsibilities respectively for external affairs, lifelong learning and research.
Andrew Burrows, a Middle Temple barrister and professor of English law at University College, London, has been appointed to the new Norton Rose professorship of commercial and financial law at the University of Oxford from October 1999. Other Oxford University appointments include Jeremy Richardson, professor of European public policy at the University of Essex, who joins Nuffield College as Nuffield professor of comparative European politics; Kevin Roberts, professor of economics at the London School of Economics, who takes the Sir John Hicks professorship of economics from next April and a fellowship at Nuffield; James Malcomson, professor of economics at the University of Southampton, who joins All Souls as a professor of economics; and David Mant, professor of primary care epidemiology at the University of Southampton, who becomes professor of general practice based at Kellogg College.
A Newton-Abraham visiting professorship for 1999-2000 goes to Stuart Rice, Frank P. Hixon distinguished service professor at the James Franck Institute and department of chemistry, University of Chicago.
