Tens of thousands of students took to the streets across Europe this week as part of an international week of action.
Students were due to march through London on Wednesday to protest against tuition fees. The march, organised by the Campaign for Free Education, was expected to be supported by Tony Benn MP and pop band Chumbawamba.
The demonstration was not supported by the National Union of Students, although one of the NUS's national executive members, Kate Buckell, is chairwoman of the CfE.
