Nurses are not carrying on
The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting's review will investigate attrition rates from university nursing courses - a critical issue as it costs about Pounds 35,000 to train a nurse to diploma level.
A recent report from the Council of Deans and Heads of Universities' Faculties of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visitors says one in seven trainee nurses does not seek registration. The Royal College of Nursing cites dropout rates of up to 30 per cent from nursing courses.
Tony Butterworth, chairman of the Council of Deans, said: "A workforce planning system that feeds more and more students into expanding programmes but continues to leak large numbers of students who go elsewhere to work on graduation and do not bother to register for the profession is clearly flawed."
