Second Call for

Conference Proposals

The Programme of European Research Conferences (EURESCO), consisting of top-level scientific discussion meetings in all areas of research, from mathematics and natural sciences to engineering sciences, social sciences and humanities. This Programme promotes series of meetings, devoted to the same general subject, normally taking place about every other year. The ESF is now inviting proposals for new conference series, as well as for the continuation of established ones, when justified. Deadline: September 15. Only proposals for conferences taking place in the year 2001 or after will be considered. Proposals should be drafted according to the Guidelines on the EURESCO WEB page. They should be submitted to the EURESCO office as an Email attachment to euresco-proposals@esf.org so that the text can be easily edited if necessary. Before developing a full size proposal it may be appropriate to contact the EURESCO office by e-mail with a short synopsis to verify whether the planned event(s) would, in principle, be suitable for the EURESCO scheme. JOSEPH ROWNTREE FOUNDATION

www.jrf.org.uk

Young People's

Programme - 'The role of the family and other informal support in assisting young people through the transition to adulthood.' Recent research has suggested that the transition to adulthood is becoming an increasingly extended process. The thrust of social policy encourages (and sometimes forces) young people to be dependent on their family for economic, social and personal support into their late teens and early twenties. At the same time there is some evidence that not all families are willing or able to provide this level of support, generating inequalities of opportunity and the potential for social exclusion for some young people. Proposals are invited for research to explore more fully the ways in which young people relate to and depend on their families and other sources of informal support during the period of transition. The research should focus on economic relationships but also examine significant sources of social and personal support. It should include:

a. young people from a wide variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds; b. young people living in the parental home and those living away; c. the roles of both immediate and extended family members, including siblings, grandparents, step parents and siblings, parents living in separate households; d. the roles played by friends and peers, and by other adults; proposals to take account of the perspectives of both the young people themselves and their family, friends and peers. Three hard copies of full proposals in the appropriate format (see the wesite) should be received by the deadline. Proposals should be sent to: Lynne Etheridge-Bowe, Research Department, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 40 Water End, York YO30 6WP; Tel: 01904 615911; Fax: 01904 620072. Deadline: September 8.

BIOCHEMICAL SOCIETY

www.biochemsoc.org.uk

General Travel Fund

The Society has a fund from which grants are made available to assist eligible members in meeting the cost of attending scientific meetings or for short visits to other laboratories. Applications for grants are assessed competitively by the Travel Grants Committee, and will usually be for a proportion (25-40%) of the projected costs and will not normally exceed Pounds 500. Meetings for which grants are sought must have a substantial biochemical content and the applicant must give evidence of active participation in the meeting (e.g. Abstract of Presentation). Members resident in the UK and Irish Republic may apply for a grant to travel to meetings anywhere in the world. The Society is concerned to help young scientists become established, particularly in the international community. Priority is therefore given to applicants in their post-doctoral years and in the early years of their careers. Deadlines: January 1, March 1, May 1 and September 1. Application forms can be downloaded from the website or contact: The Biochemical Society, 59 Portland Place, London W1N 3AJ; Tel: 0171-580 5530; Fax: 0171 637 3626; Email: genadmin@biochemistry.org

Earthwatch Institute is an international coalition of citizens and scientists working to promote sustainable conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage by creating partnerships between scientists, educators, and the general public.
