Phil Harris, joint director of the centre for corporate and public affairs at Manchester Metropolitan University, has been elected chair of the Academy of Marketing. He succeeds David Carson.
Deborah Cameron, former professor of English language at Strathclyde University, becomes professor of languages in education at the Institute of Education in September.
Simon Dixon, professor of modern history at the University of Glasgow, becomes professor of modern history at the University of Leeds in September.
Nicholas Royle, reader in English at the University of Stirling, takes a chair in English at the University of Sussex in September.
Also at Sussex, Paul Smith, professor of English and cultural studies at George Mason University, joins in September with a chair in media studies. John Holmwood, professor of sociology at the University of Edinburgh, has been appointed to a chair of sociology from January 2000, when Andrew Liddle, visiting fellow in astrophysics at Sussex and lecturer in astrophysics at Imperial, also takes up a chair in astrophysics.
Sir Ghillean Prance, former director of the Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Peter Crane, the new director, have been awarded visiting professorships in the botany department at the University of Reading.
The university has also appointed as visiting professors: Darko Suvin, from McGill University, Canada, as professor in the departments of English and history; John Farrington, research fellow at the Overseas Development Institute, London, visiting the department of agricultural extension and rural development; David Williams, consultant in biochemistry at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, visiting the school of animal and microbial sciences; Peter Buckley, professor of economics at the University of Leeds, visiting the economics department; Margaret Laurie, music librarian at Reading, visiting the department of music; Clark McPhail, Fulbright senior research scholar, visiting the department of politics; Christoph Bluth, chair of international studies at the University of Leeds, visiting the centre for Euro-Asian studies; Steve Jarvis, group leader in soil science at the North Wyke Research Station, Okehampton, Devon, visiting the department of soil sciences; and John Twidell, professor at the AMSET Centre, Horninghold, Leeds, visiting the department of engineering.
