Colleges are struggling to recruit enough teachers to cope with massive demand for foreign language classes, according to research from the Further Education Development Agency. The research, part of the Nuffield Language Enquiry, found that 30 per cent of colleges cannot meet the demand for language classes, largely because they lacked teachers. However, students are rejecting French and German classes, opting for Spanish and Italian instead. Demand for German has dropped by 56 per cent in three years, while demand for Spanish has increased by 52 per cent.
