Historian Helene Carrere d'Encausse has become the 31st permanent secretary of the Academie Francaise, the first woman to hold the post. One of only three women ever to belong to the body, which was founded in 1635 to safeguard the French language, Mme Carrere d'Encausse was elected unopposed. She will be called "Madame le secretaire perpetuel".
