A Russian judge has rejected an appeal by a jailed research worker accused of military espionage while working for two Canadian universities. Igor Sutyagin, of the Moscow-based Institute of US and Canadian Studies, has been imprisoned for the past eight months while the FSB - successor to the KGB - investigates spying and treason charges. The authorities allege Mr Sutyagin's Canadian Defence Ministry-funded study on the relations between Russian military and civilian leaders was a cover for espionage activities. Mr Sutyagin denies the charges.
