The value of an honorary degree has been questioned before but rarely has one been rejected in favour of the virtual variety.
Friends and former colleagues of social worker Eric Hardy have secured the support of health secretary Alan Milburn to award Mr Hardy an honorary doctorate of philanthropy from the imaginary University of Public Service.
They had wanted to nominate him for an honorary degree from a conventional university but Mr Hardy, 80, refused to hear of it.
