A ministerial survey has revealed a 37.1 per cent dropout rate at Rio de Janeiro's 22 state and private university institutes resulting in an estimated annual loss to the country of $300 million. The highest failures were in physics, followed by economics and chemical engineering. Jose Henrique Vilhena, rector of Rio de Janeiro's federal university, blamed archaic structures at university and ministerial levels.
