Winner of the "warm, cuddly grant-making trusts" prize for entries in the new Directory of Grant-Making Trusts is the McLaren Foundation, which states: "Enjoyable expeditions overseas for students on the pretext of some scientific investigation of doubtful utility that claims to compress into two-three weeks scientific work that would require a period of years, or to assist for a few weeks a native population (whose language usually they cannot speak) to carry out simple construction works that they are far better able to carry out themselves . . . are not entertained."
