Laptop plan criticised by NUS
Warwick University's proposal to require students to have laptop computers has been called “top-up fees by the back door” by the National Union of Students.
Laptop ownership will become mandatory from 2003 at an estimated cost of £1,250 each. Subsidies will be available for poorer students.

Management research fails to net funding
Management research proposals are less successful than other types of research at securing cash, according to Gordon Marshall, chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council. He told a meeting last night that the reasons for the low success rate should be investigated.

Roads blamed for polluting countryside
The United Kingdom road network was today blamed for “severely contaminating” surrounding land, rivers and wildlife. The claim followed a three-year study on the impact of the controversial Newbury bypass, carried out by experts from Surrey University.
