Only rich will study in London

London's universities are in danger of becoming closed to all but well-off students, claimed a student finance expert this week.

Claire Callender, of South Bank University, said that unless measures such as London allowances and transport subsidies were adopted, there was "a danger that only rich students would be able to attend university in London".

Many students in London tackle financial problems by living at home. But they miss out socially, and may not be able to participate fully in their course, she said.

The conference on funding and the future of higher and further education in London was organised by the Greater London Authority.
