Austrian tenure talks falter
Talks between the Austrian government and university teachers over plans to restrict academic tenure have broken down. The government believes new employment conditions, part of its plan to turn state-run universities into more autonomous enterprises within two years, will create more competition, flexibility and diversity.

Arrested Ethiopians returned to university
Most of the students arrested during last week's riots in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa have been released. Three lorry-loads of students were reported to have been driven back to Addis Ababa University.
