2001 Pilgrim Trust Conservation Awards
Mamiko Matsumura , who graduated from the Textile Conservation Centre (TCC) at the University of Southampton last year, has won first prize in the prestigious 2001 Pilgrim Trust Conservation Awards. The prize was awarded for Mamiko's final year project investigating the deterioration of early plastic objects.
Both Mamiko and the Textile Conservation Centre receive awards of £5,000. As part of her project Mamiko developed a simple means to detect harmful acidic fumes given off by plastic costume accessories dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, enabling them to be stored and preserved effectively.
