University hopefuls prove discriminating customers
University candidates discriminate between old and new universities, according to research. Barkers Education, a recruitment advertising and education marketing agency, also found that a good reputation for teaching was a major consideration for applicants.
Foot-and-mouth sparks exam pleas
A-level exam boards received more than 4,000 requests from candidates for special consideration due to the disruption caused by foot and mouth. A total of 4,372 candidates applied for special consideration. The Joint Council for General Qualifications said each case would be judged on its merits.
Scots more likely to achieve firsts
Students from Scotland are more likely to get a first-class degree than students from anywhere else in the United Kingdom, according to a regional analysis of those who graduated in 1999. Geoffrey Alderman, formerly pro vice-chancellor at Middlesex University and now vice-president of Touro College in New York, said that more than 10 per cent of Scots gained a first compared with 9 per cent of students from many parts of England.
