Joan Stringer, principal of Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University College, will become Scotland's first female university principal in January when she succeeds John Mavor at Napier University.
Professor Stringer, vice-convener of Universities Scotland, served for six years as a commissioner with the Equal Opportunities Commission. She graduated in history and politics from Keele University, and her PhD examined the effectiveness of Britain's industrial training policy.
