Salford lecturers face compulsory redundancies
Lecturers at Salford Univeristy may withold exam results after it emerged that compulsory redundancies were being considered to lose 70 jobs by September. A senate meeting has approved closure of more than 60 undergraduate programmes, many of which are in chemistry, maths, biology and environmental science.
Second day of pay strikes by FE lecturers
Thousands of college lecturers were striking today over pay. Students at about 280 further education colleges across the UK were facing disruption for the second day running. Members of the largest lecturers' union, Natfhe, called for action over "insulting" 1.5% pay rise offer.
Glasgow opens postgraduate scholarship scheme
Glasgow University has set up a postgraduate scholarship scheme for the children of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York's World Trade Center. The scholarship commemorates Glasgow graduate Colin McArthur, senior vice-president of Aon Inc., who died in the attack.
Demotion of senior lecturer sparks EIS protest
Members of the Educational Institute of Scotland at Motherwell College today staged a second one-day strike to protest against the demotion of senior lecturer and EIS branch convenor Douglas Nicol. The college said union claims that Mr Nicol had been victimised were "categorically untrue".
1979 Istanbul student killer sentenced
