The European Commission has published a call for tenders for a study on forest protection.
The contracting party will be assigned the following tasks with regard to coordination and monitoring activities under the Community's scheme to protect forests against fire:
- to work on the final stage of implementing and monitoring the regulation (lists of high and medium-risk areas, protection plans, fire-prevention projects and programmes);
- to evaluate the scheme by monitoring the progress of the projects and programmes submitted and how the aid granted is used;
- to analyse indicators from the common European platform for information on fires for 1985-2001 (2003 report);
- to help assess the measures' effectiveness, in order for the report required in Article 10 of the regulation to be prepared.
The main tasks involved in achieving these objectives cover managing and analysing information together with database management. This work began in 1992.
The external contracting party will be advised by a scientific advisory group.
