Damage detection project seeks collaboration for further development

An EU funded project which succeeded in developing technology to monitor and detect damage in large scale constructions such as bridges, tunnels, domes and offshore facilities is looking for collaboration to further develop the application.

The structural reliability of constructions is vital to their performance as well as to human safety. Their stability is threatened however by environmental or man-made disturbances along with the integral stresses and strains of the structures themselves. The AMADEUS (Accurate modelling and damage detection in high safety and cost structures) project has developed a method for testing the 'healthy' state of structures against a database of the same structure when damaged. According to the differences between these two sets of measurements, a verdict on the stability of the building can be made.

The technology is likely to be of particular interest for the aerospace, construction, automotive and aeronautics industries. The research consortium also believes that, with future developments and evolution, the technology could be used to assess damage to machine tools, offshore and road transport interests.
