The Privy Council has upheld a complaint by the Association of University Teachers that Birmingham University broke its statutes when the vice-chancellor assumed the power to appoint members of a redundancy committee.
Acting on behalf of the Queen as the university's visitor, the Privy Council said that only a committee, not an individual, could take such powers. The university is considering how to make up to 100 staff redundant to save £5 million.
