Norman Gillies, director of Scotland's only Gaelic college, has been appointed to an honorary chair in contemporary Highland studies at Aberdeen University.
Dr Gillies has been a key figure in the Gaelic revival. He was appointed secretary of Sabhal Mor Ostaig on Skye in 1983, when it took in its first full-time students, and he has been director since 1988. Sabhal Mor is part of the UHI Millennium Institute federation. It attracts some 500 students annually for short courses in Gaelic.
