Apologies. Apparently something vaguely amusing did happen at the Liberal Democrats conference last week, contrary to The Diary's earlier report. The Liberal Democrats' education spokeswoman in the Lords, Baroness Sharp, made a blunder while chairing the AUT's fringe meeting.
She introduced Tom Wilson, deputy general secretary of lecturers' union Natfhe, as general secretary, which prompted one wag in the audience to quip: "No, he's not. But he'd like to be."
