Japanese studies are facing an "insecure" future in the UK, with nine institutions axeing courses, undergraduate numbers falling and libraries facing acute budget shortages. A report by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and the Japan Foundation says that overall student demand is well below what is considered to be in the national interest.
