Universities face £3 billion bill for building repairs
A third of British university buildings still need significant repairs costing £3 billion despite an overall improvement in the general condition of the estate, according to a study by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. It found that some 8.6 million square metres of non-residential university space is in poor condition.

QCA tests viability of digital applications
Universities could soon be assessing examples of school pupils' work sent electronically as part of the applications process. Exams watchdog the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority is researching the viability of "digital portfolios" with technology firm Ultralab in an experiment involving 250 pupils aged 11 to 14 at 10 schools in England.
