Last weekend, BBC1's Panorama staged its own University Challenge with two teams battling it out over top-up fees. Interestingly, the schools representative on the pro top-up fees team happened to be William Atkinson, headmaster of Phoenix High School, London, which education secretary Charles Clarke was due to visit the next day. He was later overheard allocating blame for his team's defeat and condemning the team's "bloody professors" - the University of Sheffield's Bob Boucher and Buckingham University's Chris Woodhead - as "useless".
