Moves in the European Parliament that could have outlawed experiments on cloned human embryo cells in the UK have been defeated. The Human Tissues Directive was passed by MEPs on Tuesday. Opponents to the research called for it to be subject to provisions that protected public health and respected fundamental rights. A Department of Health source said this was excellent news for British scientists who are building an international lead in stem-cell research.
