Controversy...
This year's new year honours list has been dogged by more controversy than ever, with mounting pressure on the government to open up the secretive process under which worthy recipients can be blackballed for gongs.
Nothing exemplified this more than the case of Medical Research Council chief Colin Blakemore, passed over for a knighthood because, his defenders claimed, of his outspoken defence of medically linked experimentation on animals.
But higher and further education did well this year with a haul of eight knighthoods, three dames, 20 CBEs, 36 OBEs and 28 MBEs.
