The government is investing £23 million to help young researchers move from short-term contracts to a permanent academic job. Under the Department of Trade and Industry's academic fellowship scheme, up to 200 five-year fellowships will be created every year until 2006, each to the value of £125,000. PhD students will be able to apply for funding in areas covered by the research councils and the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
