Tim Gardam has been appointed principal of St Anne's College, Oxford - the first man to hold the post. He will succeed Ruth Deech on September 1, after she leaves to become the first independent adjudicator for higher education. Gardam is a former director of television and director of programmes at Channel 4. He created the programme Timewatch and has edited Panorama and Newsnight .
In celebration of its 40th anniversary in 2003, York University has appointed: Helen Goodluck of Ottawa University professor of languages and linguistic science; David Richards , former professor of mental health nursing at Manchester University, professor of health sciences; Quentin Summerfield , deputy director of the Medical Research Council's Institute of Hearing Research in Nottingham, professor of psychology; Chris Thomas , a conservation biologist formerly at Leeds University, professor of biology; David Wootton , professor of intellectual history at Queen Mary, University of London, professor of history; Geoffrey Bailey , of Newcastle University, professor of archaeology; Stephen Gorard , formerly at the School of Education at Cardiff University, professor of educational studies; John Hobcraft , of Princeton University and chair of the board of European Demographic Institutes, professor of social policy and social work; and James Woodcock , professor of software engineering at Kent University, professor of computer science.
Lancaster University has appointed Simon Bainbridge , head of the School of English at Keele University, professor of Romantic studies; and Derek Sayer , Canada research chair at Alberta University, professor of history.
