Reading University's business school has appointed Philip Allmendinger , former head of the department of land economy at Aberdeen University, chair of planning studies; and Michael Ball , who contributed to the Office of Fair Trading investigation into the activity of estate agents, part-time professor of urban and property economics.

Oxford University has appointed Helen Margetts , professor in political science and director of the School of Public Policy at University College London, as the first professor of society and the internet, and a fellow of Mansfield College; and Andrew Wilson , lecturer in Roman archaeology and fellow of Wolfson College, professor of the archaeology of the Roman Empire, and a fellow of All Souls College. Andreas Willi , oberassistant at the University of Basel, will succeed Anna Morpurgo Davies as Diebold professor of comparative philology and fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, next January; and Nicholas Cheeseman , former officer commanding provost and security services with the RAF, has been appointed university marshal and head of security services.

Gideon Davies , Royal Society research fellow, professor in the department of chemistry at York University, has been appointed to an anniversary chair at York.

Tricia Meers , director of the School of Education at Liverpool John Moores University, has been appointed head of the School of Education and Training at Greenwich University from July 1.

Stuart McCutcheon , vice-chancellor of Victoria University, Wellington, has been appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Auckland from January 2005.
